August 10 School Transitions
It’s that nostalgic time of year again, time to return to school. Nostalgic that is, for some, but challenging for kids with neurological differences. The days are already long like winter and it’s just August! The advocates of New Mexico Family Network will be on hand to discuss what adults can do to smooth the transition to school. What steps should caregivers take to start the school year on the right track for a successful school year? The discussion will include letter writing, the IEP and 504 and advocating for classroom accommodations.
Oct 12 Spanish Speaking Panel
This workshop will provide an opportunity for Spanish speaking caregivers to hear presentations from advocates and occupational therapists about neurologically different kids. You will have an opportunity to speak with these experts about sensory processing and school related issues all in Spanish. Please contact NMFN if you are willing to be a Spanish speaking childcare provider for this session!
December 14 Sensory Processing Disorder
Does your child have challenges with loud noises, difficulty with transitions, little awareness or over awareness of pain or temperature, coordination problems, avoidance to people or clothing textures, easily distracted, walks on tip-toe, seeks out spinning, or an unusual sensitivity to sounds and smells. If any of these behaviors are constant with your child, your child may be having sensory integrative difficulties. Come to this workshop and learn why your child is interpreting and responding differently to information. Learn strategies and where to find help for your child.

Nov 9 Diagnosis
Securing a diagnosis for a child with a neurobiological disorder or illness can prove to be confusing, frustrating and take years to accomplish. A solid diagnosis can feel like a door opening to understanding, compassion and a plan for treatment and higher quality of life. A diagnosis can importantly provide accommodations from the school and juvenile justice systems making our children’s lives a whole lot easier. What’s the big deal about diagnosis? Join the discussion with an expert on diagnosis.

Dyslexia is a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read. These individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having normal intelligence. Although the disorder varies from person to person, common characteristics among people with dyslexia are difficulty with spelling, phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds), and/or rapid visual-verbal responding. A representative from the South West chapter of the International Dyslexia Association will join us to discuss dyslexia.
